Prestashop was originally created in 2005 within the Epitech school of computing by five young students. The original project, translated into two languages (French, English) was called phpopenstore (POS). The creators decided to engage in free software since its conception. It was tested by several small merchants who participated in co-writing the specifications.

Since 2005, it has continued to evolve until 2009: Version 1.2 is now available in a "stable" version and translated into 29 languages, many shops use this CMS very light (6Mb) on the Net.
